CNN is reporting that Al-Zawahiri was not among those killed in yesterday’s missile strike on a suspected terrorist safe house in Pakistan.

All I can say is “darn.” While it’s frustrating that some of these guys are still breathing oxygen, I do take some comfort that for the past 4 years, they have had to constantly look over their shoulder and can’t sleep in the same bed for two nights in a row.

Yea, the problem is where the missed missiles landed… on top of some little children. I don’t understand why the CIA just bombed random houses instead of targeting specific places where Al-Zawahiri might have been.

Don’t get me started on the CIA. Although they are subject to the concept of “we rarely if ever get to hear their successes, but we always get to hear of their failures” they do need to get a lot better.

There were some children killed in this attack, and while we didn’t get the big man, this is the right strategy that we need to adopt. It’s similar to a “if you had to kill xx number of people to cure cancer, which would save millions of lives, would you do it and how high could that number rise before it would be morally wrong to do it?” Taking out this guy is important to save the lives of thousands, even millions of people. So long as we do not intentionally target civies and innocents, we have to be able to live with these incidents and not let them deter us from our goals. We could go back and forth here for a while debating ends justifying means, but the enemies we face today only seem to give us these choiceless choices and we have not the luxury of inertia. Thanks for your comment.

[…] My previous post on the subject is here. There has been some back and forth on this event in terms of what actually took place. At first, it was hopeful that he was dead. Then it became a “we missed but we did get a good number of bad guys.” Shortly thereafter, the story was that only civilians were killed and this was a major screw up. However, despite the local protests and Musharraf ’s obvious duplicity (to his people he expressed solidarity in their outrage, to us he is like, *wink* and *nod*, a line he must toe ever so diligently), later reports started back tracking on all the innocents killed and included a lot of other shady info like bodies being removed and other things. It’s not until you traverse a lot of different sources that you can make an attempt to put together a more complete picture. Thankfully, that is exactly what Confederate Yankee has done on his site.
